Turkic-Islamic states, were established over the centuries in various forms-both large and small-within every state and principality across every corner of Anatolia, drawing on both the traditions and teachings of Islam and the customs and traditions of the Turks. The Principality of the İnançoğulları, which ruled within the boundaries of the district of Denizli in south-western Anatolia, and the madrasah it built, constitute one of the finest examples of this phenomenon. As the first known madrasah in the district of Denizli and the region’s most important educational institution until the 17th century, this institution has held a central position in the region’s cultural and academic life since its foundation. Indeed, this article examines the İshak Bey Madrasah, a long-established institution that managed to survive from the 14th to the 19th century thanks to the substantial endowments allocated to it-a testament to the importance placed on education-and which has taken its place on the historical stage. In this article; the aim is to shed light on the socio-economic and cultural history of the
Denizli district by examining the institutional origins and founder, administrative mechanisms and operations, staffing and intellectual infrastructure, financial foundations and budgetary balance staffing and intellectual infrastructure, financial foundations and budgetary balance of the İshak Bey Madrasah-one of the representatives of the Ottoman education system in the provinces-within the context of the historical and political processes it underwent from its foundation onwards. Within this framework, the tahrir, evkaf, mühimme and hurufat registers, as well as various official documents, identified in different archival collections were examined; based on the data obtained, they were analysed from a monographic perspective focusing on the madrasahs-which constituted the local manifestation of the Ottoman education network-and their institutional structure and functional dimensions. This article, which examines the five-century institutional history of the İshak Bey Madrasah in the light of primary sources, has filled a significant gap in the literature as the first independent and original study written on the institution.
