WRITING AND LANGUAGE INTERACTION AMONG ANCIENT NEAR EAST SOCIETIES

Öz

Writing is the most effective way of recording and transferring the experiences reliably into next generations. Another function of writing is that it takes certain linguistic structures and words with it in passage to another society. “Summer cuneiform writing”, which was invented by Sumerians living in Mesopotamia around 3200 B.C and regarded as the first writing system illuminating the history of mankind, was used by other tribes living in and around Mesopotamia in later periods. Each society that used that writing system was affected by the language and culture of the society from which they adapted it on one hand and transferred it into another society by adding much from their own language and culture on the other. Thus, most of the societies living around the 4th and 1st millennium B.C in Ancient Near East experienced a considerable interaction of language and culture, using this writing system by adapting from each other. Another type of writing used in that age is Anatolian hieroglyphic writing. Used in Anatolia, this writing system also had a linguistic and cultural impact on the societies where it was transferred. In this study, inter-communal transition of writing, and linguistic and cultural effect caused by this transition have been heavily focused on. Such an interaction is also obvious in the languages of modern world societies.
