L’UNIVERS BOVARYQUE (UNIVERSE OF BOVARYSM)

Öz

This study is intended to examine the history of the terms ‘Bovarysm’, its significance and meaning in literary terminology. Bovarysm is derived from the novel of Gustave Flaubert (1821-1880), the ingenious novelist of French literature and the pioneer of Realism, named as Madame Bovary (1857) which is perceived as an offence to society, morality and religion, and accepted as the manifest of realism. It is the name given by Jules de Gaultier (1858-1942) to the attitudes and behaviors peculiar to Emma, the heroine of the novel; that is, the gap between the real opportunities and excessive demands of the individual is called Bovarysm. The situation of Emma dreaming of passionate love affairs and a gorgeous life arises from the fact that Emma has read plenty of romantic pieces during her youth. Emma’s dream world has become so extravagant that her marital life, new relationships and shopaholicism bring her nothing but dissatisfaction and disappointment. The desire to live in the mysterious and virtual world of romanticism, far away from the realities of life, is a case of dissatisfaction in the social, political, economic and sensual sense of the word. Flaubert, as known, said for his novel that “I’m writing not only for girls of the present-day France but also for all human race.” In the light of these words, we can notice that this kind of lifestyle unfortunately preserves its validity and universality with different forms and names these days without a culture and type discrimination, and that it is probable that it will also be carried forward to the future in the way as it currently is.
