A Support To National Struggle From The East: The Case Of Siirt

Öz

The Ottoman Empire’ defeat during the World War I has started a new challenging period for the Turkish society. Thus, the victorious states have invaded country’s lands upon the Armistice of Montrose that the Empire had signed. Mustafa Kemal Paşa, with his comrades in arms, has shown a determination of resistance and taken action. This struggle has been supported by all regions of Turkey. The National Struggle spirit has been alive in Siirt which had been a sanjak (district) of Bitlis and not directly been invaded during the World War I. Some tribes and religious scholars fighting against Russians and Armenians around Bitlis during the World War I. have shown a similar attitude during the National Struggle as well. People of Siirt have sided with the unity and solidarity and supported the National Struggle. Led by müdafaa-i hukuk cemiyetleri (the associations for defense of national rights) established in the city, protest meetings against the invasions have been organized.
