Anxiety, Depression and Quality of Life Levels of Mothers with Children with Cerebral Palsy

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the levels of anxiety, depression and quality of life in mothers of children with cerebral palsy and motor impairment in children with cerebral palsy. MATERIALS and METHODS: 98 mothers with children diagnosed with cerebral palsy were included in the study. Sociodemographic information of the participants was recorded. The Beck Anxiety Inventory(BAI), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the World Health Organization Short Form Turkish version (WHOQOL-BREF-TR) scale were applied to the mothers. The Pediatric Functional Independence Measurement (WeeFIM), the Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and the Bimanuel Fine Motor Function (BFMF) scores were recorded. RESULTS: Differences in GMFCS, BFMF and WeeFIM scores of children with cerebral palsy were not related to BAI and BDI scores of mothers (p>0,05). There was a significant correlation between WeeFIM score and WHOQOL-BREF-TR social relations subtitle (p<0,05). There was a significant correlation between BFMF levels and WHOQOL-BREF-TR sub-titles of general health, social relations and environmental health (p<0,05). It was observed that there was no significant relationship between GMFCS level of children and mothers' quality of life (p>0,05). CONCLUSIONS: Functional disability in children with cerebral palsy negatively affects the quality of life of mothers. Depression and anxiety levels of mothers are affected independently of the functional levels of children with cerebral palsy. It was concluded that increasing the quality of life of mothers who have children with cerebral palsy with physical, psychological and economic support would be important for mothers and their children, their families, social and professional environments.
