Changes in Attachment Styles and Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Following a Psychodrama Group Intervention: A Pilot Study
Öz
Objective: The present study aimed to investigate preliminary changes following participation in a psychodrama group intervention, a method that enables participants to explore key aspects of their interpersonal behaviors, strengths, limitations, and inconsistencies through observation and feedback from other people. Methods: The psychodrama group involved nine university students. Before and after the nineteen-session intervention, participants completed Personal Information Form, Experiences in Close Relationships – Revised (ECR – R), Interpersonal Emotion Regulation Questionnaire and Brief Symptom Inventory. Pre-test and post-test scores were compared to examine changes in attachment-related behaviors and interpersonal emotion regulation strategies. Results: No statistically significant differences were found between the pre-test and post-test scores on attachment-related behaviors and interpersonal emotion regulation strategies. Considering the results, although the findings did not reach statistical significance, moderate to large effect sizes were observed for attachment avoidance, attachment anxiety, perspective taking, and soothing, suggesting that participation in a psychodrama group may be associated with changes in attachment-related processes and interpersonal emotion regulation. Conclusion: These preliminary findings should be interpreted cautiously and replicated in follow-up studies with a control group.
