Predictive Role of the Time Perspective on the Probability of Suicide
Öz
Objective: Time perspective has the potential to determine how we evaluate events, how we see life, and how we act. This research aimed to examine the predictive effect of time perspectives and deviations from a balanced time perspective on the probability of suicide. Method: This cross-sectional study, which used convenience and snowball sampling methods, included a sample of 384 female (61%) and 245 male (39%) participants (Mean = 37.08; SD = 13.79). Participants completed a Personal Information Form, the Suicide Probability Scale, and the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory. Results: The findings showed that positive past time perspective and future time perspective were inversely related to the probability of suicide; while other time perspectives (negative past, fatalistic present) and deviations from a balanced time perspective were positively related to the probability of suicide. After controlling for demographic variables, the first hierarchical model showed that past-positive (β = -0.272), past-negative (β = 0.306), and present-fatalistic (β = 0.103) perspectives significantly predicted suicide probability (R² Change = 0.254). In the second model, deviation from balanced time perspective significantly and positively predicted suicide probability (β = 0.476, R² Change = 0.213). Conclusion: The time perspective and deviation from a balanced time perspective are strong predictors of suicide probabilty; incorporating these variables into efforts to assess and prevent suicide probability may be of critical importance.
