The Role of Urban Design in Enhancing Humanization in Libyan Cities Through Place Making and Developing Public Spaces

Abstract

Most countries globally confront the challenge of escalating population densities, accompanied by an increase in private transportation. This phenomenon has led to the degradation of urban environments in these nations, with a severe scarcity of urban spaces for residents, resulting in settings unsuitable for health and social well-being. Libya has long grappled with this issue, reaching a point where mechanical requirements superseded spatial needs of the populace. This has fostered behavioral randomness and a deficiency in urban patterns that preserve the human environment and foster the concept of humanization. This research, within its theoretical framework, illuminates the concept of urban design and its foundational principles. In its practical application, it presents a case study of an urban area, proposing strategies to revitalize urban spaces to accommodate the population and improve their environmental, social, health, and recreational needs. The study underscores the urgent necessity to re-evaluate the urban design paradigm to achieve appropriate humanization for community members in Libya.
