The paper tries to situate the Russian language learner in the Russian environment through Stranovedeniye, a term the Russians have coined for cultural studies. The paper concludes by submitting that stranovedeniye should be an important aspect of Russian language teaching to foreigners, and thus should be implemented as a means of achieving Russian language competence.
