Extending the life of wooden building materials is critical and important to historic preservation applications and techniques as well as to pass such historical structures to the next generations. The susceptibility of wood and wooden structures to biodegradation and biodeterioration can be minimized through design, construction practices, maintenance, and protection/preservation with wood preservatives. Wood under proper conditions in terms of moisture, oxygen, temperature, food source etc. is degraded by fungi and insects since wood is a biological material; however, wood protection and preservation techniques help wood and wooden structures increase durability, performance and service life against moisture, fungal decay and mold formation. Moreover, fire resistance of wood and historic wooden structures can be extended by using proper fire retardants in wood elements. Prior to any practices to be applied, a careful evaluation and inspection of existing conditions in wooden structures should be conducted to determine the appropriate level of intervention. This paper reviews brief information on selection and specification of wood protection methods and preservatives to extend service life of historic wooden structures
