In this research, use of colorants in protection and repair of natural fibers was examined; experts working in public institutions and private sector particularly located in İstanbul region were consulted and the applications performed and materials used were assessed. As a result of the meetings held, different points of view recorded, information obtained from written sources and the data obtained through experimental methods are assessed together. Furthermore, silk, wool and cotton fabrics selected as natural fiber as well as handmade paper was painted with natural and synthetic dyes and tested using experimental methods. Some parts of the devastations observed on historical works arise from false restoration applications and use of inconvenient materials. For this reason, to have sufficient knowledge about the applications to be performed and the materials to be used is a fundamental necessity. It was determined that the conservators connected within the study and repair technicians usually avoided using colorants with the concern of performing a false application, they preferred natural materials under unavoidable circumstances and they most usually performed coloring using tea. In certain cases, practitioners may use synthetic products as well considering that they are natural. Within this scope, it was revealed that coloring applications to be performed in protection and repair works require approaches in the field of paper and in the field of textile, which approaches, are completely different from each other and materials should be selected considering those features as well. The purpose of this research is creating a broader point of view and a foundation for reconciliation.
