The function and the social role of the
mosques have been very significant within the Muslim society in China from as
early as Tang dynasty to present. It is not only the bath where Muslims clean
their bodies and carry out their religious activities; it is also the school
that educates religious scholars and training religious personals by using them
for religious education such as madrasa; as also being used for
political, economic, cultural, life and social benefit of the Muslim community.
The styles of mosques in China is
divided into two architectural structures: First, the mosques built as
according to the Arab architectural style with dome; the second one is the
mosques in the Chinese imperial palace architectural style. Muslims in China
have been very active in building mosques. This tradition has been continued
for thousands of years. The most important reason for this, is that in the
religious life of Chinese Muslims, the Mosque where the community can be
gathered together is very important. According to historical records, ‘Huai
shengsi’ (Prophet Muhammad Memorial Mosque) the oldest mosque in China, it was
built in Tang dynasty (618-907) in the city of Guangdong.
