Theater Reform in Italy with Commedia Dell’arte, Typecastings and Carlo Goldoni

Abstract

Commedia dell’Arte, one of the most important tradition of Italian folk theater of 16th and 17th century, is also a tradition that has affected whole Europe at the same time. The most important characteristic of Commedia dell’Arte is the mask that the players use when they are on stage to act. These masks were not anymore simple objects attached on face, each of them turned to a real character and by the help of costums and various accessories formed the Commedia dell’Arte. The most famous masks or characters of Commedia dell’Arte are Pantalone, Arlecchino, Colombina, Capitano and Dottore. The tradition of Commedia dell’Arte gets spoiled in Italy with Carlo Goldoni. Goldoni says that instead of comedy of improvisation the written plays must be used and the actors will have the possibility of playing different characters in each play instead of the same characters.
