Visual Representations of the Concept of Guidance: A Qualitative Analysis Based on the Drawings of Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge Teacher Candidates
Öz
This study examines how Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge teacher candidates conceptualise guidance and which symbolic and metaphorical indicators they use to visualise their mental representations. It was designed to identify the initial guidance perceptions of theology undergraduates who had not yet taken the guidance course. Conducted within the qualitative research paradigm, the study used a single-page structured application form as the data collection instrument. Participants were asked to draw the meaning that came to mind when they heard the term guidance and to support their drawings with brief written explanations. The study group consisted of fourth-year Religious Culture and Moral Knowledge teacher candidates enrolled in a Faculty of Theology. Of 65 students invited to participate, 50 volunteered. The drawings and explanations were analysed through thematic analysis. After open coding, the data were classified within four a priori guidance themes: directive, facilitative, developmental, and crisis-focused guidance. The findings showed that representations were concentrated mainly in directive guidance (72%; n=36), followed by facilitative guidance (22%; n=11). Developmental representations remained limited (6%; n=3), and no drawing corresponding to the crisis-focused theme was identified. These results indicate a predominantly way-guiding understanding of guidance among candidates before formal instruction in the course had begun.
