ACTIVATING SCHEMATA THROUGH PRE-WRITING ACTIVITIES FOR BETTER ACADEMIC WRITING SKILLS

Öz

This study investigates the impact of activating schemas (pre-existing knowledge frameworks) via pre-writing exercises on the enhancement of students' academic writing abilities. The research, carried out with first-year students of the Simultaneous Translation Department at Mardin Artuklu University, employed the action research methodology. The participants engaged in writing assignments on the specified topics – “Glocalization,” “Freedom of Speech,” and “The Civil Rights Movement” – for a duration of three weeks. Initially, the students composed text without any preliminary information; subsequently, they were instructed to write again after being provided with prior information supplemented by videos and reading materials. Written texts were gathered from the students at both stages, and their perspectives were corroborated through immediate interviews. In the initial writing, a significant deficiency in structure and information was observed in the students' texts; in the subsequent writing, more successful outcomes were achieved regarding substance, organization, and language. The study found that activating students' schemas on the issue enhanced their motivation during the writing process, resulting in the production of more full and coherent compositions. It was determined that pre-writing exercises serve as a significant pedagogical instrument in the instruction of academic writing.
