Past Tense as Seen and Learned by Learners of Turkish as a Foreign Language
Öz
This study examines the learning process of the observed and acquired past tense suffixes by learners of Turkish as a foreign language, as well as their level of understanding of the semantic differences between these suffixes. The research was conducted with 50 students from different language backgrounds and proficiency levels at a TÖMER affiliated with a state university in Bursa. The participants were asked 10 structured interview questions via Google Forms, and the data were analyzed using content analysis. Employing a case study design, the study explored in depth the participants’ process of learning past tense suffixes. The responses were classified under specific themes. The findings indicate that learners experienced greater difficulty with the acquired past tense, particularly those whose native language is different from Turkic languages, in selecting the appropriate suffixes and perceiving the semantic differences. The skill most affected by anxiety about making mistakes was speaking. Therefore, it is recommended to develop materials that convey the meaning and usage of these suffixes, present the past tense suffixes in different contexts, adopt communication-based approaches, increase practice for productive skills, and provide separate classes for students from Turkic language backgrounds and those from other languages.
