The Relationship Between Foreign Direct Investments and Foreign Trade in Turkey

Öz

Foreign trade and foreign direct investment are important facts for countries' strategic goals, policies and economic situations. Both concepts are elements that can provide sustainability in the economies and growth targets of countries. Therefore, questions such as whether the two situations are mutually supportive or alternative to each other may arise. Therefore, it is of great importance to determine the relationship between the two concepts in question. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there is any relationship between foreign trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) in Turkey. For this reason, the relationship between export, import and FDI has been examined both on a total and sectoral basis. In the analyses, ADF and PP unit root tests, Johansen cointegration test and Granger causality test were applied. Quarterly data covering the period from 2005:Q1 to 2021:Q4 were used in the research. As a result of the research, it has been revealed that there is a cointegration relationship between FDI and foreign trade. As a result of the causality analysis, it was concluded that total exports are the cause of total FDI and service sector exports are also the cause of FDI in the service sector. In addition, a causal relationship from imports to GDP and from GDP to FDI has been determined in the service sector.

Türkiye’de doğrudan yabancı yatırımlar ile dış ticaret ilişkisi

Öz

Dış ticaret ve doğrudan yabancı yatırım ülkelerin stratejik hedefleri, politikaları ve ekonomik durumları için önemli olgulardandır. Her iki kavram da ülkelerin ekonomileri ve büyüme hedeflerinde sürdürülebilirliği sağlayabilecek unsurlardandır. Dolayısıyla, iki durumun da birbirini destekleyici veya birbirine alternatif olup olmadıkları gibi sorular ortaya çıkabilmektedir. Bu nedenle, söz konusu iki kavramın arasındaki ilişkinin belirlenmesi de büyük önem arz etmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı; Türkiye’de doğrudan yabancı yatırımlar (DYY) ile dış ticaret arasında herhangi bir ilişki olup olmadığının tespit edilmesidir. Bu nedenle ihracat ve ithalatın DYY ile ilişkisi hem toplam hem de sektörel bazda incelenmiştir. Analizlerde ADF ve PP birim kök testleri, Johansen eşbütünleşme testi ve Granger nedensellik testi uygulanmıştır. Araştırmada, 2005:Q1 – 2021:Q4 arasındaki dönemi kapsayan üç aylık veriler kullanılmıştır. Araştırma sonucunda, DYY ile dış ticaret arasında eşbütünleşme ilişkisinin olduğu ortaya çıkmıştır. Nedensellik analizleri sonucunda ise, toplam ihracatın toplam DYY’lerin ve hizmet sektörü ihracatının da yine hizmet sektöründeki DYY’lerin nedeni olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Ayrıca, hizmet sektöründe ithalattan GDP’ye ve GDP’den de DYY’lere doğru bir nedensellik ilişkisi tespit edilmiştir.
