A Longitudinal Study Examining the Effects of Training Time on Perceived Stress, Pre-Sleep Arousal, and Sleep Quality in Male Amateur Bodybuilders
Öz
The study aimed to investigate the effects of training frequency on sleep quality, stress, and arousal levels among athletes who regularly engage in resistance/weight training. To this end, 30 male amateur bodybuilders aged 18-25 (M=22.13; SD =1.85) were examined longitudinally. Each participant who met the inclusion criteria was randomly assigned to one of two groups via computer software. Within their assigned group, they were given a random code by the software. Training times were divided into two different time slots (Morning Group: Training time and sleep time < 4 hours, Evening Group: Training time and sleep time > 8 hours), and a training program was designed. The amateur bodybuilders were given weight-training sessions that were carefully planned and structured in terms of intensity and duration. The amateur bodybuilders were required to continue these training sessions routinely for 4 weeks. Following the program, the Perceived Stress Scale, Pre-Sleep Arousal Scale, and Richards-Campbell Sleep Scale were administered to the participants at weekly intervals. The Mixed ANOVA results suggest that regular exercise reduces stress and pre-sleep arousal, regardless of whether it is performed in the morning or evening. Examining the relationships among training time, perceived stress, arousal, and sleep quality can offer original and up-to-date contributions to the applied sports science and health psychology literature.
