The Relationship Between Exercise Habits and Mood Profiles: A Hierarchical Regression Analysis

Öz

This study aimed to examine the relationships between exercise habits and mood profiles using a hierarchical regression framework. A total of 712 adults with varying levels of exercise participation joined the study. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form and the short form of the Profile of Mood States (POMS-16), which assesses multidimensional mood components including depression, anger, fatigue, and vigor. Exercise-related variables included weekly exercise frequency, perceived exercise intensity, and engagement in a secondary type of exercise. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted in two steps, with demographic variables (age, gender, income, residence type, and household size) entered in the first block and exercise-related variables entered in the second block. Assumption checks confirmed the suitability of the data for regression analysis. The results indicated that demographic variables explained a small but statistically significant proportion of variance in mood disturbance scores (R² = .034). The inclusion of exercise-related variables was associated with an increase in explained variance (ΔR² = .032). Although exercise frequency and perceived exercise intensity were not significantly associated with mood disturbance scores, engagement in a secondary type of exercise was significantly associated with lower mood disturbance scores (B = −3.27, p < .001). The findings suggest that the relationships between exercise behavior and mood profiles may involve experiential and contextual dimensions beyond quantitative exercise indicators alone. Overall, the study highlights the importance of considering multidimensional and contextual aspects of exercise in understanding psychological outcomes.
