The aim of this study was to ensure validity and reliability of Farrell et. al.’s (1998) Special Event Volunteer Motivation Scale (SEVMS) for volunteers of sports events in Turkey. Sample of the study consisted of 320 female, 575 male and 895 in total ( X age= 23.7 ± 5.79 years) volunteers who served in six different sports events “ISF Handball 2014 World Schools Championship, Turkish Basketball League, FIBA World Championship for Women 2014, TBL All Star 2015, 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, and 36th Vodafone Istanbul Marathon”. Construct validity of SEVMS was tested by employing exploratory factor analysis and results demonstrated a four-factor model “purposive, solidary, commitments, and self-interest” with 22 items. Model fit of this model was tested by confirmatory factor analysis. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was used for determining internal consistency of the scale. Consequently, it was proved that Turkish version of SEVMS is a valid and reliable instrument, and can be used for measuring motivations of volunteers who take part in sports events.
