Abstract

Emerging
from the influence of German Expressionist movement and the visual culture of
silent film and caricature in the first half of the twentieth century, woodcut novel is a genre in which a
narrative is told with only images, without using any text. The term was coined
by Belgian artist Frans Masereel who was also the pioneer of the genre. Also
known as wordless novel, woodcut novel has a great importance since it paved
the way for today’s graphic novel, even though its popularity couldn’t last for
long.  Lynd Ward who became the pioneer
of the genre in America produced his first woodcut novel Gods’ Man in 1929. After its great success both artistically and
commercially, Ward created five additional woodcut novels, one of which is Vertigo that will be discussed in this
article. His last complete novel Vertigo
consisting of 230 wood engravings is regarded as the masterpiece of the artist.

Lynd Ward ve Ağaç Baskı Romanı Vertıgo

Yirminci
yüzyılın ilk yarısında Alman Dışavurumculuk akımından ve film ve karikatür gibi
görsel kültürden beslenerek doğan ağaç
baskı roman, yazı kullanmadan sadece görsellerle hikaye anlatma prensibine
dayanır ve öncüsü Belçikalı sanatçı Frans Masereel tarafından, ağaç baskı
olarak basılmış imgelerin hikaye anlatacak şekilde kitap formatında basılması
olarak tanımlanmıştır. Literatürde yazısız
roman terimiyle dönüşümlü olarak kullanılmakta olan ağaç baskı roman, kısa
ömürlü bir akım olsa da günümüz grafik romanına temel hazırlamış ve yön vermiş
olması açısından büyük öneme sahiptir. Masereel’den sonra bu akımın
Amerika’daki öncüsü olmuş Lynd Ward, ilk kez 1929 yılında ürettiği ağaç baskı
romanı Tanrıların Adamı ile büyük ses
getirmiştir. Bu makalede ele alınacak olan Vertigo,
Ward’ın bu alanda kazandırmış olduğu altı eserden sonuncusudur ve 230 adet ağaç
kazımayla sanatçının başyapıtı olarak görülmektedir.
