Anxıety Levels And Strategıes for Copıng wıth Stress of Nursıng Students at Health College Before Clınıcal Practıce

Introduction and Aim: All people could live anxiety in different levels through all their lives. When they live mild level anxiety, they could concentrate to the situation, learn and be motivated. However, learning, understanding, deciding and problem solving ability could effected negatively in severe anxiety. This study was conducted to determine anxiety levels and strategies for coping with stress of nursing students at health college before clinical practice, as descriptive and correlational.
Method: The study was conducted with first, second and third class nursing students who will do clinical practice after, between February- March in 2010. All of students who accepted to participate to the study (n:140) were taken to the study. Data was collected with quastionnaire form, State Anxiety Inventory (SAI) and Strategies for Coping with Stress Inventory (SCSI). Data was evaluated by using descriptive statistics, homogenity and importance tests between two means.
Results: It is determined that of the students; 82% was girl, 59% was between 18-20 years old, 90% came from out of city, 44% stayed at home with their friends, 38% paid their expenses from their family and credits. Fifty-two percent of the students told their relations with families were very good and relations with friends of 63% of them was good. Of the students; 59% told they wanted to come this department as voluntary, 54% preferred it because of job guarantee, 83% loved this job. Before the clinical practice, 82% of the students generally lived tension and embarrassment because of unknown about hospital environment, fear of making mistake and not being successful from practice. Also 63% of them told they could cope with these problems. In the study, anxiety score means were 45.49±10.49 for girls, 40.00±12.35 for boys (p<0.05). Also, helpless approach score means that one of SAI subgroup scales of girls and hopeful approach scores of boys were higher (U=1017.000, p=0.028, U=858.500, p= 0.002, respectively).
Conclusions: Clinicians and instructor should be work in collaboration because of clinic nurses have got important roles in student education. So that, the students could get desired approaches from clinical practices without living stress and anxiety.
