Objective: The aim of the study was to determinethe relationship betweenbalancefunctional exercise capacity and peripheral muscle strengthin elderly individuals.
Material-Method: 34 elderly individuals who have living in Narlidere Nursing Home Elderly Care and Rehabilitation Centerwere included in the study. Patients’ demographics, balance (Tinetti Balance and Gait Assessment-POMA), functional exercise capacity (6 Minute Walk Test-6MWT) and peripheral muscle strength (knee extensor strength) were evaluated. The relationship between each of the arguments in elderly subjects was evaluated by Pearson correlation analysis.
Results: The positive and significant relationship was found between 6MWT distance and POMA score (r = 0.544, p = 0.001), POMA score and knee extension strength (r = 0.364, p = 0.034) and 6MWT distance and knee extension strength (r = 0.495, p = 0.003).
Conclusion: Balance, functional exercise capacity and knee extension strength was found to be associated with each other in elderly people. Therefore, it should be considered to increase functional exercise capacity and knee extension strength in geriatric rehabilitation program to develop the balance in the elderly.
