Objective: The study was conducted in order to examine the students’ attitudes regarding the gender roles. The target population of the study was consisted of the students continuing to the 2014-2015 academic year of a Foundation University located in Gaziantep.
Material-Method: The sample of the research consisted of 641 students who continue their studies and it was applied to a total of 448 students including 250 girls and 198 boys who accepted the research. The participation rate is 69.8 %. The Attitude Scale is the data collection tools, socio-demographic information form and gender roles. The questionnaire was applied under supervision and the necessary explanations were made. The obtained data were evaluated in SPSS program with number, frequency, percentage, T-test and ANOVA. In order to be able to conduct the research, the ethical and legal permissions and verbal approvals were taken from the students participated to the study.
Results: It was determined that the average age of the students participating in the study was 21.0 ± 1.9; the students are studied as follows, 36.2% in Physiotherapy, 29.7% in Nutrition, 28.1% in Nursing, 6.0% in Emergency and First Aid program; their grades are as follows, 34.6% in 1st grade, 19.6% in 2nd grade, 23.7% in 3rd grade, 22.1% in 4th grade; 55.8% female, 44.2% male; 64.5% have an elementary family; 11.6% of the students’ mothers are not literate; 2.5% of the students’ fathers are not literate; 42.9% of their mothers are housewives, 29.7% of their fathers are officials. As a result of the research, while the highest score received from the scale is 146, the lowest score is 56 and the high scores received indicate the egalitarian attitude, as of the low scores indicate the traditional attitude. Among the grade based Gender Roles scores of the students’ significant differences were found statistically (p<0.05). It was determined that the discrepancy source is originated from the 3rd grade. Among the section based Gender Roles scores of the students’ significant differences were found statistically (F=4.686, p<0.05).
Conclusion: It was determined that the students have an egalitarian attitude in general in terms of their gender roles.
