Determination of Residual Effect of Urban Solid Waste Compost on Tomato Grown under Green House Condition
Abstract
Urban solid waste has used to as a fertilizer, but heavy metal concentration might be
hazardous for human health. Therefore, a research was conducted to determine the effects of urban
solid waste on tomato yield, quality and nutrition status in 2004-2006 years. According to research
results, urban solid waste was found positive effects on tomato yield and quality by the way the heavy
metal content of the soil and fruit samples were not critical levels. Afterwards, in this second research
was conducted so that remain effect of urban solid waste could be determined in 2008-2011 years.
The experiment was designed according to the completely randomized block design with 4 replicates
in the same greenhouse. During the experiment soil and fruit samples were taken and analyzed. The
results of the analysis showed that remain urban solid waste was increased the yield, the pH of fruit
juice, the amount of water soluble solids, titretable acidity compared to control group. The soil heavy
metal content wasn’t excess the acceptable range limits. Fruit samples lead (Pb) content was not
excessive the acceptable range limit whereas cadmium and nickel contents were excessive. By the
way fruit cadmium and nickel content were excessive the acceptable range limits of control, this
situation may be resulted from fertilizer and pesticide applications.
