The Relationship Between Burnout, Fatigue, and Resilience Among Educators

Abstract

This study examines the relationships between burnout, fatigue, and resilience among educators in the Pendik, Tuzla, and Kartal districts of Istanbul during the 2022-2023 academic year. A correlational survey model, a quantitative method, was used, and data were collected from 344 teachers and educational administrators through convenience sampling. The data were analyzed using SPSS 21, employing methods such as frequency analysis, percentage calculation, t-tests, ANOVA, and correlation analysis. The results indicated that participants experienced a "moderate" level of burnout in the emotional exhaustion sub-dimension, while the personal accomplishment and depersonalization sub-dimensions were at a "low" level. Fatigue perception across all sub-dimensions was also "low," whereas resilience perception was "high." Furthermore, significant differences were found between burnout, fatigue, and resilience when considering demographic variables like school level and seniority. There was a high positive correlation between fatigue and emotional exhaustion, a low positive correlation between fatigue and personal accomplishment, as well as a low negative correlation between resilience and depersonalization. Based on these findings, it is suggested that targeted interventions should be developed by the Ministry of National Education to address the moderate level of emotional exhaustion, especially for educators at the middle school level where this dimension is higher. Furthermore, specific programs aimed at mitigating fatigue are recommended, given its strong positive link with emotional exhaustion.
