Possible Use of Ribosome Inactivating Proteins for the Control of Plant Viruses

Öz

A group of proteins called ribosome inactivating proteins (RIPs) are capable of damaging ribosomes enzymatically in an irreversible manner. RIPs have been found to be prevalent in some plant species which belongs to Cucurbitaceae, Euphorbiaceae, Poaceae and Caryophyllaceae families and have been identified in some fungi and marine algae. RIPs are generally classified into three groups as Type 1, Type 2 and Type 3 according to their molecular structure. Although their role in nature is not fully understood yet, revealing of some features has been promising to benefit from them in agricultural practices. Several studies have reported that these proteins are effective against some fungi and viruses which are pathogenic for plants. Given the structure, function and biological activities, the antiviral activity of RIP isolated from plants appears to have potential for new developments in combating plant virus diseases.
