A Study Upon the Interaction Between Azotobacter and V.A. Mycorrhiza and Their Effects on The Yield of Wheat Plant

Interactions between N2-fixing bacterium Azotobacter chroococcum and six different species of V.A. mycorrhizal fungi were studied in relation to the effects on the growth and yield of wheat plant. Mycorrhizal plants produced significantly higher root infection than the noninoculated control plants. Of the six different VAM fungi tested, Glomus monosporus produced the most root infection although no significant differences existed amongst different VAM fungi. Azotobacter inoculation did not bring any significant effect on the mycorrhizal root infection, and the interaction between VAM and Azobacter inoculations was also not significant. İnoculation of soil with Azotobacter or mycorrhizal fungi increased the dry matter production and grain yield of wheat. Among the different VAM fungi, soil inoculation with Glomus monosporus, Acaulospara sp. and Saclerocystis rubiformis in the presence of Azotobacter chroococcum produced significantly higher dry matter production and grain yield than their corrosponding controls. The significant increases in dry matter production and grain yield from combination of seed inoculation with A. chroococcum and soil inoculation with either Glomus monospora or Acaulospora sp. and Sclerocystis rubiformis may be attributed to an ineraesed phosphate transport by the mycorrhizal fungus.
