Glass Goblet Finds from Olba Theater Excavations

This study presents several glass goblet fragments discovered during the excavations at the theater of Olba and evaluates their typologies. The production techniques and the distributions of contemporary glass goblet examples found in Roman Asia Minor and the other Eastern Mediterranean territories of the empire are also discussed. Based on the original excavation finds from Olba, a new approach to the glass goblet types that were used in Rough Cilicia is provided. The glass goblet fragments from Olba can be classified into five main groups. The differences in the stem and base forms of the goblets are determined by the shaping techniques used. This means that the goblets were produced either by shaping a single glass gather, or by joining the initially separately prepared body and base parts. Specimens that belong to both shaping methods have been recorded in Olba. It seems possible to date the Olba theater glass goblet finds to 5th and 7th centuries.

Olba Tiyatro Kazısı Cam Kadeh Buluntuları

Öz

Olba tiyatro kazıları sırasında bulunan çok sayıda cam kadeh parçasının ele alındığı bu çalışmada, bunlarla ilgili olarak yapılan değerlendirme ve ortaya çıkan tipoloji sunulmaktadır. Ayrıca, Roma İmparatorluğu topraklarında Anadolu ve Doğu Akdeniz merkezlerinde ele geçen diğer çağdaş cam kadeh örneklerinin üretim teknikleri, dağılımları üzerinde durulmaktadır. Böylece, Doğu Dağlık Kilikia’da Olba özgün kazı buluntuları bağlamında konuya yeni bir yaklaşım getirilmektedir. Olba cam kadeh parçaları üzerinde yapılan çalışmada beş temel grup belirlenmiş bulunmaktadır. Kadehlerin sap ve kaide biçimlerindeki farklılıkları onların yapımında kullanılan yöntemler belirlemektedir. Buna göre, tek bir cam balonunun biçimlendirilmesi ile ya da gövde ve kaide kısmının ayrı ayrı, iki parça halinde hazırlandıktan sonra birbirine bağlanması ile cam kadehler yapılmaktadır. Olba’da her iki yöntemin de uygulandığı örnekler saptanmaktadır. Olba tiyatrosu kazısı cam kadeh buluntularını 5. ve 7. yüzyıllara tarihlemek olası görünmektedir.
