The Perception Of Safety Culture From The Perspective Of Blue-Collar Workers: An Example From Cable Manufacturing Industry In Denizli Province

Yıl 2015, Cilt: 3 , 205 - 240, 01.08.2015

Öz

It is known that the majority of the occupational accidents result from insecure behaviors of the employees and therefore the importance of safety culture is often laid emphasis on. It is essential that much emphasis be placed on establishment of safe working conditions and creating safe behaviors in order to prevent occupational accidents. Organizations have started to feel obliged to build a safety culture, have such culture adopted by the employees and make it widespread. In this study, it is aimed to measure safety perception by using basic dimensions of the safety culture commonly accepted in literature. In order to measure safety culture, blue-collar workers were assessed through questionnaire method. The data were analyzed through multi variable statistical analysis method. According to data on occupational accidents, it is clear that one of every four occupational accidents happens in metal industry. It is therefore of great priority to search this issue since the accidents mostly happen in metal industry. The population of the study consists of workers at cable manufacturing industry in Denizli province. The reason for choosing this population is that operations in metal industry are usually carried out in this area. Five out of nine cable factories were chosen randomly and blue collar workers constituted the population of the study. The factors contributing to the safety culture were discussed within individual and administrative aspects. In administrative aspect, working environment and conditions; commitment of the management, encouragement of the management, training, leadership, working place and production safety were dealt with. Behavior, awareness, participation and communication were analyzed individually
