This review employs the 5C framework to analyze Filming Death: End-of-Life Documentary Cinema by Outi Hakola (2024). The framework, illustrated in Figure 1, examines the context of Hakola's work within the intersections of documentary film and cultural discourse on death, delves into the content's exploration of end-of-life representations, critically assesses the book’s strengths and weaknesses, compares it with related scholarly works, and concludes with insights into Hakola’s contribution to the broader discourse on mortality in cinema. Hakola’s interdisciplinary approach, drawing from documentary theory, medical humanities, death studies, and ethics of representation, highlights the significant role of documentary filmmaking in shaping contemporary cultural perceptions of death. By focusing on ethical dilemmas, personal narratives, and the balance between authenticity and exploitation, Hakola presents a comprehensive analysis that expands the boundaries of how death is filmed and interpreted.

Bu inceleme, Outi Hakola'nın Filming Death: End-of-Life Documentary Cinema (2024) adlı eserini analiz etmek için 5C çerçevesini kullanmaktadır. Şekil 1'de gösterilen bu çerçeve, Hakola'nın çalışmasını belgesel sinema ve ölüm üzerine kültürel söylemlerin kesişimindeki bağlamda ele almakta, eserin içerik olarak hayatın sonu temsillerine dair incelemelerine odaklanmakta, kitabın güçlü ve zayıf yönlerini eleştirel bir şekilde değerlendirmekte, ilgili akademik çalışmalarla karşılaştırmalar yapmakta ve Hakola'nın sinemada ölümlülük üzerine daha geniş bir söyleme olan katkılarına dair çıkarımlarla sonlanmaktadır. Hakola’nın belgesel teorisi, tıbbi beşeri bilimler, ölüm çalışmaları ve temsil etiği gibi disiplinlerarası bir yaklaşımla ele aldığı eser, belgesel film yapımının ölümün çağdaş kültürel algılarını şekillendirmedeki önemli rolünü vurgulamaktadır. Etik ikilemlere, kişisel anlatılara ve otantiklik ile sömürü arasındaki dengeye odaklanarak, Hakola ölümün nasıl filme alındığı ve yorumlandığına dair sınırları genişleten kapsamlı bir analiz sunmaktadır.
