Geliyor Gelmekte Olan: A Case of Prophetic Footing in Turkish X Discourse

Öz

In Turkish X (formerly Twitter) discourse, a formulaic imminence template circulates: geliyor gelmekte olan, alongside its companion form yaklaşıyor yaklaşmakta olan, which is less frequent in this corpus. This paper treats the sequence as a sociolinguistic micro-genre rather than as redundant aspect marking. It also treats the template as a small piece of digital folklore: a vernacular formula that circulates through repetition, variation, and quotation in Turkish X. The analysis draws on a keyword-defined sample of 120 public posts (2020–2025), sampled from posts retrieved via string search and manually coded for topical domain, pragmatic function, template variant, and salient paratextual cues. All percentages reported here are within-sample distributions, they do not estimate platform-wide prevalence. They do not estimate the prevalence of imminence framing on Turkish X in general. In this sample, posts cluster in politics/news (35.0%) and sports (29.2%), with a secondary economy/cost of living cluster (14.2%). The template is overwhelmingly realized in canonical root-matched doubled variants (96.7%), especially geliyor + gelmekte olan (85.0%). Recurrent paratextual cues include ellipsis (25.0%), exclamation marks (20.8%), hourglass emojis (17.5%), hashtags (14.2%), and occasional all-caps intensification (6.7%). The template most often builds hype/teasing (50.8%), but it also supports warning/alarm (13.3%), meta-mention uses (12.5%), mock-official irony (11.7%), antagonism/threat (7.5%), and dread/fatalism (4.2%). This paper argues that the format works through register contrast: it pairs conversational -Iyor with the reportorial -mAktA + olan package and projects an announcer-like footing that can be used sincerely or parodically. The paper shows how an enregistered institutional cadence becomes portable in platform discourse and how imminence is used to coordinate attention and affect.
