The Historical, Political, and Sociocultural Dimensions of the Hijrah as a Foundational Force in the Formation of Islamic Civilization
Öz
This study examines the Hijrah (migration), which took place in 622 CE, not merely as a spatial relocation or an act of escape from the oppressive environment of Mecca, but as the foundational paradigm in the formation of Islamic civilization. The psychological violence, physical torture, socio-economic boycott, and assassination attempts orchestrated by the Meccan aristocracy necessitated the search for a secure center where Islam could be practiced and institutionalized. Accordingly, far from being an unplanned movement, the Hijrah was the product of deliberate strategic planning that integrated intelligence, logistics, and tactical elements. The selection of Yathrib (Medina) as the destination was grounded in multidimensional socio-political dynamics, including the city's strategic location regarding trade and defense, the need for a just arbiter arising from prolonged blood feuds between the Aws and Khazraj tribes, and the messianic expectation of a prophet within its demographic fabric. Following the Hijrah, the transition from tribal clannism (asabiyyah) to statehood was established upon three fundamental institutional pillars: First, the Prophet's Mosque (al-Masjid al-Nabawi), which served not merely as a place of worship, but as the administrative hub, judiciary, educational institution (al-Suffah), and military headquarters functioning as the heart of the civilization. Second, the Institutional Brotherhood (al-Mu’akhah), which facilitated social integration between the Muhajirun (Emigrants) and the Ansar (Helpers) and broke the local Jewish economic monopoly through an interest-free Medinan market that synergized the agricultural expertise of the Ansar with the commercial acumen of the Muhajirun. Third, the Constitution of Medina (al-Mu'ahadah), regarded as the first written constitution, which united Muslim, Jewish, and polytheistic factions under a single political confederation defined by the concept of ummah, while guaranteeing religious freedom, the individualization of criminal responsibility, and collective defense. With the conquest of Mecca, the Hijrah ceased to be a mandatory settlement and demographic policy; under the guidance of the Prophet, it evolved into an ethical and spiritual struggle (jihad) defined by self-discipline and the abstention from sins and prohibitions. Within the framework of the equation “Homeland + State + Jihad = Civilization,” this paper aims to demonstrate that the Hijrah was a unique historical process that enabled the statehood of the early Muslim community and its transformation into a universal civilization. By analyzing the political, legal, and socio-cultural ramifications of the Hijrah, this study discusses its enduring significance as a comprehensive “civilizational vision.”
