Digital Examination of Material Deteriorations through Metaverse Technologies: A Case Study with the Mozilla Hubs Platform

Historical stone structures experience, significant material deterioration over time due to various environmental factors. Early detection of these deteriorations is critical for the preservation of cultural heritage. Due to the high cost, safety risks, and access limitations of traditional inspection methods; new digital technology-based approaches have gained, importance in damage assessment. This study proposes a hybrid method based on the integration of 360° panoramic imaging and the Mozilla Hubs Metaverse platform, for the detection of material deterioration in historical stone structures. In this context, Mardin Latifiye Mosque was selected as the case study. High-resolution 360° images of the Latifiye Mosque were captured using the NCTech iris360°, professional panoramic camera and converted into an interactive, navigable virtual environment, within the Mozilla Hubs platform. Five experts conducted an approximately three-hour inspection in the virtual environment through their avatars. The findings revealed, various types of deterioration in the yellow limestone used in the mosque, including surface erosion, crack formation, delamination, salt efflorescence, and biological colonization. Deteriorations concentrated particularly, on the exterior facades were documented in detail, thanks to the high zoom and annotation tools of the virtual environment. As a result, the proposed method offers significant advantages, over traditional methods, in terms of eliminating physical risks, facilitating interdisciplinary collaboration, creating permanent digital archives, and accelerating the inspection process.
