PERCEIVED TRUST IN HIGHER EDUCATION: A CROSS-SECTIONAL SURVEY INVESTIGATION

Yıl 2026, Cilt: 17 Sayı: 1, 83 - 96, 30.01.2026

Trust serves as a fundamental pillar of effective higher education systems, influencing enrollment decisions, institutional legitimacy, and societal support. Amid declining global confidence in higher education, understanding trust dynamics becomes essential for policy development and institutional sustainability. Perceived trust in higher education institutions has been challenged by social, economic, political, and institutional factors, leading to a wide range of consequences for students, universities, and society. When trust in these institutions weakens due to persistent social issues, interest in higher education may be jeopardized. Therefore, determining the level public trust to higher education institutions becomes critical. This study examines perceived trust in higher education institutions across various demographic variables. Using a descriptive cross-sectional survey design, we collected data from a conveniently selected sample of 483 participants with an already established, valid, and reliable instrument. We analyzed the data using descriptive and inferential statistics with IBM SPSS 26. Results indicate that trust levels are generally low across all demographic groups such as gender, income, age, and sector. Additionally, a significant difference emerges within a specific age category. However, the average trust scores across gender, income, and sector do not show significant differences. Based on these findings, we provide recommendations for stakeholders and propose strategies to enhance trust in higher education institutions.
