ERYTHRAI SYNTELEIASI ÜZERİNE YENİ BİR DEĞERLENDİRME

Öz

Bu çalışmada MÖ 478/7 yılında Pers tehdidine karşı kurulan Attika-Delos Deniz Birliği’nin üyelerinden biri olan Erythrai kenti ve ona bağlı yerleşimlerin Birliğe phoros (vergi) ödeme yöntemi incelenmiştir. Bu bağlamda “vergilerin ortak ödenmesi” anlamına gelen synteleia kavramı, Attika-Delos Deniz Birliği’nin üyelerinden vergi alma yöntemlerinden biri olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Atina Vergi Listeleri’ne göre Mimas Yarımadası üzerinde konumlanan Erythrai kentinin teritoryumunda yer alan Pteleon, Boutheia, Sidousa, Polikhna ve Elaioussa adlı yerleşimlerin synteleia çatısı altında vergi ödedikleri görülmektedir. Anlamı ve içeriği oldukça geniş olan synteleia kavramı Attika-Delos Deniz Birliği’nin karmaşık vergi sisteminin bir parçasıydı. Synteleianın mutlaka hegemonik bir yapının varlığını ima etmemekle birlikte bir bağlılığa işaret ettiği açıkça anlaşılmaktadır. Bu sistemde birçok durumda bir kentin yakınındaki daha küçük ve bağımlı topluluklar adına ödeme yaptığı bilinmektedir. Erythrai synteleiasını oluşturan yerleşimlerin lokalizasyonu konusunda da tartışmalar devam etmektedir. Çalışmada antik kaynaklar, yazıtlar ve yüzey araştırmaları sonuçlarından yola çıkılarak bu yerleşimlerin lokalizasyonları konusunda bazı tespitler yapılmıştır.

A New Assessment of the Erythraean Syntely

Öz

This study examines the method by which Erythrae -one of the members of the Delian League, established in 478/7 BCE in response to the Persian threat- and its dependent settlements paid phoros (tribute) to the League. In this context, the concept of syntely, meaning “to pay taxes jointly” was one of the methods by which the Delian League collected tribute from its members. According to the Athenian Tribute Lists, the settlements of Pteleum, Boutheia, Sidousa, Polichna, and Elaioussa, located within the territory of Erythrae on the Mimas Peninsula, are recorded as paying tribute under the framework of syntely. Encompassing a broad range of meanings, the concept of syntely formed an integral part of the Delian League’s complex taxation system. While syntely does not necessarily presuppose a hegemonic structure, it clearly denotes a relationship of subordination. Within this system, it is well attested that, in many instances, a city made payments on behalf of smaller, dependent communities in its vicinity. The precise localization of the settlements that constituted the Erythrae syntely remains a subject of scholarly debate. Drawing upon ancient literary sources, inscriptions, and the results of surface surveys, this study offers several observations concerning the possible locations of these settlements.
