THEATRE AS A TOOL FOR CREATING NATIONAL IDENTITY IN THE EARLY YEARS OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE REPUBLIC OF TÜRKİYE
Öz
This study examines how theatre was used to construct national identity during the founding years of the United States and the Republic of Türkiye, two modern states built on democratic foundations. Since the emergence of nation-states, creating a community of citizens aligned with ideological goals has been crucial for the sustainability of the political structure. In this context, theatre, with its didactic and unifying effect, has emerged as an effective tool in instilling national consciousness. In the newly established states, discourses, sometimes shaped by the themes playwrights addressed and sometimes by the direct interventions of the founding cadres, served to construct national identity. The rejection of tradition, the adoption of modern values, and the transmission of new social norms to citizens are fundamental elements of this process. Although the aims largely coincided across both states, the process of constructing national identity unfolded along distinct historical and cultural dynamics.
