EARLY THULUTH INSCRIPTIONS IN SELJUQ IRAN (11TH-12TH CENTURIES): VISUAL FORM, FUNCTION, AND AUTHORITY
Öz
The emergence of Thuluth as a monumental script during the Seljuq period transformed the epigraphic culture of the eastern Islamic world, yet its earliest architectural manifestations remain understudied. Existing scholarship has focused on mature Thuluth and manuscript calligraphy, leaving its initial adaptation to architecture largely unexplored. This article examines early Thuluth inscriptions from the fifth and sixth centuries AH (eleventh-twelfth centuries CE), drawing on securely dated architectural and funerary inscriptions from central and northeastern Iran, supplemented by a later comparative example from Transoxiana. Through comparative analysis of letterforms, proportions, ligatures, and architectural context, the study demonstrates that monumental Thuluth developed unevenly through interactions among material constraints, workshop practices, and regional traditions while retaining elements of Kufic and Naskh. It argues that early Thuluth became an architectural medium in which script, ornament, sacred meaning, and visual authority converged, while political significance depended on specific contexts of patronage, placement, and inscriptional content.
