ADAPTATION OF THE PERCEIVED SOCIAL SUPPORT SCALE INTO TURKISH AND EXAMINING ITS METHODOLOGICAL SUITABILITY IN TURKISH OLDER ADULTS

The aging population is a global phenomenon, and understanding the social support needs of older adults is crucial for their well-being. The Perceived Social Support Scale (PSSS) is a commonly used tool to assess social support, but its applicability to diverse cultural contexts, remains a question. This study aimed to adapt the PSSS into Turkish (TR-PSSS) and examine its psychometric properties among Turkish older adults. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 341 older adults. The PSSS was translated and culturally adapted. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and Cronbach's alpha were used to assess the scale's factor structure and internal consistency. The TR-PSS demonstrated excellent internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0,95). EFA revealed a four-factor structure: emotional connection, practical support, spiritual support, and perceived reputation. These factors explained 69% of the total variance. The scale showed good convergent validity, with significant correlations among the subscales. The TR-PSSS is a reliable and valid instrument for measuring perceived social support among Turkish older adults. The findings highlight the importance of emotional connection, practical assistance, spiritual support, and perceived reputation in the social support experiences of Turkish older adults. This study contributes to the cross-cultural adaptation of the PSSS and provides a valuable tool for researchers and practitioners working with older adults in Turkiye.
