Vita Sackville-West’s All Passion Spent as an Example of the Reifungsroman

Öz

Ageing, a recurrent theme in literature, is often associated with passivity, illness, madness, inability and death. Although ageing has negative connotations and elderly people are usually given minor roles in literature, there are some notable literary works with powerful and autonomous old characters. Vita Sackville West’s novel, All Passion Spent (1931), is one of these works which narrates the extraordinary story of an old lady, who attains freedom from social constraints and reconnects with her true self in her later years. The novel can be evaluated as an example of the Reifungsroman, that is, “fiction of ripening”, a term suggested by the literary critic Barbara Frey Waxman to refer to the novels which challenge the clichés held by society about ageing and old women. With the influence of gerontological studies, the number of novels representing a positive picture of senescence has increased in post-1970 fiction. Yet, prior to that time, as a modernist writer, Vita Sackville-West achieves to confront ageism by drawing the portrait of a daring old lady. This study aims at examining representations of female ageing in All Passion Spent within the framework of the Reifungsroman. For this purpose, the studies in gerontology and literature have been focused on to demonstrate the perspectives on old age; the characteristics of the Reifungsroman have been explained; and All Passion Spent has been analyzed as an example of the Reifungsroman.
