An Eco-Gothic Approach to María Bonete Escoto’s Short Story “Lunes”
Öz
Eco-gothic is a contemporary theoretical approach that brings together ecological crisis and gothic aesthetics to examine the increasingly uncanny representations of nature, the limitations of anthropocentric thought, and the evolving relationship between the human and the nonhuman. This study explores the Spanish writer María Bonete Escoto's short story “Lunes” through the lens of eco-gothic theory, with the aim of demonstrating how the climate crisis is represented through gothic narrative aesthetics. The analysis focuses on the representation of nature, the uncanny, fear, space, the human–nature relationship, and ecological destruction. The analysis argues that “Lunes” presents nature not as a passive backdrop but as an active force that shapes the course of the narrative. By depicting the sea reclaiming the land, the disappearance of the coastline, the transformation of a hotel into a ruin, the spread of mold into human living spaces, and the motif of abnormal births, the story challenges anthropocentric notions of human dominion over nature. “Lunes” can be read not only through an eco-gothic framework but also as a representative example of contemporary eco-gothic fiction in terms of its generic characteristics. Furthermore, the study suggests that the story offers valuable interpretative possibilities from the perspective of ecophobia. By highlighting the operation of eco-gothic aesthetics in contemporary Spanish short fiction, this study seeks to contribute both to eco-gothic scholarship and to ecocritical studies of Spanish literature.
