Signs, Meaning, and Ideological Representation in the Production of Political Discourse
Öz
Language, the medium of communication, is a fundamental tool that enables the production and transmission of meaning through signs. Through this tool, it becomes possible to perform the act of signification of a communicative message, constructed by signs, across different layers of meaning, within the relational contexts of the signifier and the signified. The act of signification in which the signifier is associated with its denotative meaning and the signified with its connotative meaning is a strategic approach to revealing how and for what purposes the sign is constructed in both dimensions. Approaching the signs and their referents in the real world through cause–and–effect relationship means making invisible visible and unknown known. Historical processes, social structures, cultural and ideological signs are decisive in the construction of political discourses produced through the meaningful arrangement of signs. Such discourses transmit information and assume strategic functions that legitimize and direct specific ideological positions. Through the selection and arrangement of signs, social and ideological messages intended to be conveyed in discourse are supported and reinforced via political discourse. Thus, the targeted perceptions are created. The aim of this study is to identify linguistic signs employed in political discourse that support perception management and to examine the resulting ideological representations. This study, conducted using a qualitative research method, employed content analysis techniques and drew upon semiotics and discourse theories. In response to Donald Trump’s characterization of Spain as a “terrible partner” and his threat to halt America–Spain trade, the main signs highlighted in Pedro Sánchez’s speech regarding the Iran war were examined using Roland Barthes’ approach of denotation, connotation, and myth, and the layers of meaning produced by these signs were analyzed within the framework of Teun A. van Dijk’s critical discourse analysis approach. The analysis revealed that the political text in question has a multifaceted meaning; the intended message is reinforced through specific strategies, and these layers of meaning create targeted ideological representations within the discourse.
