AN EVALUATION ON THE ROLE OF FAMILY TIES FOR ELDERLY INDIVIDUALS IN DISASTERS: THE EXAMPLE OF THE FEBRUARY 6 EARTHQUAKES

Abstract

Abstract The February 6 earthquakes that occurred in 2023 and affected 11 provinces left behind great destruction and loss of life, while the new situations and new social movements that emerged because of these earthquakes have affected a significant segment of society, especially vulnerable groups, in an intersectional way. The universe of the study that is the subject of the research within the scope of this study consists of the elderly who migrated from these regions to Istanbul after the February 6 earthquakes. The sample of the study was determined by the snowball method as the earthquake-stricken elderly who migrated from the earthquake region, which is a subset of the Istanbul population universe, and the people they established social ties with. The Social Fragility Index was applied to the 40 earthquake-stricken elderly who were reached with the snowball method and 25 participants were determined from among them. Thus, the sample consisted of a total of 70 participants, including 15 relatives with whom these 25 earthquake-stricken elderly established a binding bond at the micro level, 15 circles with whom they established a bridging bond at the mezzo level, and 15 institutional representatives with whom they established a unifying bond at the macro level. In the study conducted using qualitative interview techniques, questions were asked to the earthquake-stricken elderly about the importance of social ties in adapting to their new settlements and the findings were presented under the relevant headings. As a result of the study, it was seen that establishing family ties face to face or by phone reduced the deepening vulnerabilities of the elderly after the earthquake by creating social solidarity and making them resilient within the society and community.

AFETLERDE YAŞLI BİREYLER İÇİN AİLE BAĞLARININ ROLÜ ÜZERİNE BİR DEĞERLENDİRME: 6 ŞUBAT DEPREMLERİ ÖRNEĞİ

Öz

2023 senesinde yaşanan ve 11 ili etkileyen 6 Şubat depremleri geride büyük yıkımlar, can kayıpları bırakırken bu depremler neticesinde gelişen yeni durumlar ve oluşan yeni sosyal hareketlilikler, başta kırılgan gruplar olmak üzere toplumun önemli bir kesimini kesişimsel olarak etkilemiştir. Bu çalışma kapsamında araştırma konusu edilen çalışmanın evrenini 6 Şubat depremleri sonrası bu bölgelerden İstanbul’a göç eden yaşlılar oluşturmaktadır. Çalışmanın örneklemi, İstanbul nüfus evreninin bir alt kümesi olan deprem bölgesinden göç eden depremzede yaşlılar ve sosyal bağ kurdukları kişiler olarak amaçlı örnekleme kartopu usulü şeklinde belirlenmiştir. Kartopu usulüyle ulaşılan 40 depremzede yaşlıya Sosyal Kırılganlık İndeksi uygulanarak onların içinden 25 katılımcı belirlenmiştir. Örneklem de böylece, bu 25 depremzede yaşlının mikro düzeyde bağlayıcı bağ kurdukları 15 yakınları, mezzo düzeyde köprü kurucu bağ kurdukları 15 çevreleri ve makro düzeyde birleştirici bağ kurdukları 15 kurum temsilcisi olmak üzere toplamda 70 katılımcıdan oluşmuştur. Nitel görüşme teknikleri kullanılarak yapılan araştırmada depremzede yaşlılara yeni yerleşim yerlerine adaptasyon sağlamada sosyal bağların önemi üzerine sorular sorulmuş ve ulaşılan bulgular ilgili başlıklar altında sunulmuştur. Çalışmada sonuç olarak, yüz yüze veya telefonla aile bağlarının kurulması, toplumsal dayanışma oluşturarak yaşlıları toplum ve topluluk içinde dirençli kılarak deprem sonrası derinleşen kırılganlıklarını azalttığı görülmüştür.
