What Do University Students Understand from “Social Justice”? The Effect of Social Justice Principles on Perception of Social Justice

Abstract

Standing of the problem: This research which is carried out because of the inadequacy of researches on social justice towards young people covers to determine how young people define and perceive the social justice. It especially includes exploring how their conditions in their societal life and in the university are reflected to their perceptions of social justice. Aim of research: This research is carried out to explore how university students define social justice and in general the effect of their evaluations about social justice principles on their perception of social justice. Method: In this research relational scanning model was used. Interviewed with 420 university students from Ankara University and each scale was implemented by face to face method. Findings and Conclusions: It was found that university students generally define social justice depending on equal opportunity principle and the evaluations regarding gender equity, citizenship, and fair distribution in scope of social justice principles had influence on the differentiation of social justice perception. Suggestions: State’s politics and programs regarding young people should be based on needs and rights. It should also try to provide social justice in young peoples’ life by means of protecting and empowering their family.

Üniversite Gençliği “Sosyal Adalet”ten Ne Anlıyor? Sosyal Adalet İlkelerinin Sosyal Adalet Algısı Üzerindeki Etkisi

Öz

Problem durumu: Gençliğe yönelik sosyal adalet araştırmasının yetersiz olmasından hareketle yürütülen bu araştırma gençlerin sosyal adaleti nasıl tanımladıklarını ve algıladıklarını; özellikle eğitim ve toplumsal yaşamdaki koşullarının sosyal adalet ve sosyal adalet ilkelerine ilişkin algılarına nasıl yansıdığını belirlemeyi içermektedir. Araştırmanın amacı: Bu araştırma üniversite öğrencilerinin sosyal adaleti nasıl tanımladıklarını ve genel olarak sosyal adalet ilkelerine ilişkin gençlerin değerlendirmelerinin sosyal adalet algısı üzerindeki etkisinin belirlenmesi amacı ile yürütülmüştür. Yöntem: Araştırmada ilişkisel tarama modeli kullanılmış, Ankara Üniversitesi’ndeki 420 üniversite öğrencisi ile görüşülmüş ve her bir ölçek karşılıklı görüşme yöntemi ile gençlere uygulanmıştır.Bulgular ve Sonuçlar: Üniversite öğrencilerinin sosyal adaleti genel olarak fırsat eşitliği bağlamında tanımladıkları; sosyal adalet ilkeleri kapsamında toplumsal cinsiyet eşitliği, vatandaşlık ve adil dağıtıma ilişkin değerlendirmelerinin sosyal adalet algısının farklılaşması üzerinde etkili olduğu bulunmuştur.Öneriler: Devletin gençlere yönelik politika ve programları ihtiyaç ve hak temelli olmalı; aileyi koruma ve güçlendirme yoluyla gençlerin yaşamında sosyal adaletin sağlanmasına çalışmalıdır.
