Self-disclosure (SD) is an important aspect of close relationships and interpersonal communication. However, few measures have been developed to measure self-disclosure in married couples. In this context, Study 1 aimed to develop a scale to measure SD in married couples. Based on the theoretical explanations of SD, relevant research findings and previous scales, items were created to develop the Spousal Self-Disclosure in Marriage Scale (SSDMS) with 5-point response options ranging from 'I do not tell at all' to 'I tell completely'. Data were collected from 264 married people using convenience sampling, and principal axis factor analysis, correlation analysis and reliability analysis were carried out. The results provided evidence for the construct validity and reliability of the SSDMS. In the second study, data were collected from 172 married people after the necessary translation process for the adaptation of the Openers Scale (OS), which includes the preparatory behaviours for spousal self-disclosure, into Turkish. In data collection, a questionnaire including SSDMS as well as OS was used. Confirmatory factor analysis and correlation analysis were applied to the data obtained. The results of the analyses showed that the adapted OS is a valid and reliable measurement tool. Finally, the results of the analyses applied to the data obtained in the third study (n=54), which was conducted to evaluate the test-retest reliability of both the SSDMS and the OS, supported that both scales were reliable. In line with the results of the study, suggestions were made for the use of both scales both in research on spousal self-disclosure in marriage and in marriage counselling or family therapy practice.
