Examining the School Belonging Sense of Athlete Students

Öz

Students with a strong sense of school belonging enjoy their school, willingly participate in activities, follow rules, and exhibit positive behaviors. It is a matter of curiosity how student-athletes, who are involved in an intense training process, develop feelings towards school. Therefore, this research aims to examine the sense of school belonging among student athletes. The study, conducted using a descriptive survey method, included a sample of 478 athletes, comprising 169 international and 309 national athletes. Data were collected using the School Sense of Belonging Scale and analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-tests. Mean score was used in the interpretation of the data, and a significance level of .05 was used. According to the research findings, student athletes have a high sense of belonging to the school (x̄=3.82). There was no significant difference in school belonging based on international athlete status. Female international athletes had a higher sense of school belonging than male international athletes. No significant difference was found between genders among athletes competing at the national level. While no significant difference was found in the sense of school belonging among international athletes according to educational level, middle school students competing at the national level were found to have a higher sense of school belonging than high school students. To strengthen student athletes' sense of school belonging, programs should be developed to increase cooperation between school administrations and coaches, and athletes should be supported in establishing a balanced relationship between their academic lives and sporting activities.

Sporcu Öğrencilerin Okul Aidiyet Duygularının İncelenmesi

Öz

Okul aidiyet duygusu yüksek olan öğrenciler okulunu sever, etkinliklere istekle katılır, kurallara uyar ve olumlu davranışlar sergiler. Yoğun antrenman süreci içinde yer alan sporcu öğrencilerin okula yönelik duygularının nasıl şekillendiği merak konusudur. Bu doğrultuda araştırmada sporcu öğrencilerin okul aidiyet duygularının incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Betimsel tarama yöntemiyle yürütülen çalışmanın örneklemini 169 millî ve 309 ulusal sporcu olmak üzere toplam 478 sporcu oluşturmuştur. Veriler Okul Aidiyet Duygusu Ölçeği yardımıyla toplanmış, tanımlayıcı istatistik ve t-testi ile analiz edilmiştir. Verilerin yorumlanmasında ortalama puan kullanılmış ve .05 anlamlılık düzeyi esas alınmıştır. Araştırma bulgularına göre sporcu öğrencilerin okul aidiyet duyguları yüksektir (x̄=3.82). Millî sporculuk durumuna göre okul aidiyet duygusunda anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmamıştır. Kadın millî sporcuların okul aidiyet duygusu erkek millî sporculardan yüksek bulunmuştur. Ulusal düzeyde yarışan sporcularda cinsiyete göre anlamlı bir farklılık tespit edilmemiştir. Eğitim kademesine göre millî sporcuların okul aidiyet duygusunda anlamlı bir farklılık görülmezken, ulusal düzeyde yarışan ortaokul öğrencilerinin okul aidiyet duyguları lise öğrencilerinden yüksek bulunmuştur. Sporcu öğrencilerin okul aidiyet duygularını güçlendirmek amacıyla okul yönetimleri ve antrenörler arasında iş birliğini artıracak programlar geliştirilmeli ve sporcuların akademik yaşamla sportif faaliyetler arasında dengeli bir ilişki kurmaları desteklenmelidir.
