AN EXAMINATION OF TEAM ATHLETES' SELF-COMPASSION AND SOCIAL SUPPORT SKILLS

Öz

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between self-compassion skills of team sport athletes and the two dimensions of social support: receiving social support and providing social support to others. Additionally, it aims to test the predictive power of self-compassion on receiving and providing social support. In the study, the relational survey model, one of the quantitative research designs, was adopted. A total of 222 athletes who have been actively participating in team sports for at least three years took part in the research. The data collection tools used in the study included a Personal Information Form, the Short Form of the Self-Compassion Scale for Athletes, and the Two-Dimensional Social Support Scale. Pearson correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were used to analyse the data. The findings of the study indicate significant positive relationships between athletes' self-compassion levels and social support variables (p<0.01). The results of the regression analysis show that the variables of receiving and providing emotional support are significant predictors of self-compassion. However, the variables of receiving and providing instrumental support did not have a statistically significant effect on self-compassion. Overall, the model was found to be significant, with the independent variables explaining 25.1% of the variance in self-compassion. This finding highlight that emotional support is more strongly associated with self-compassion.
