COMPARISON OF BIOMOTOR AND COGNITIVE PERFORMANCES IN TENNIS PLAYERS BASED ON IPSILATERAL AND CONTRALATERAL HAND-EYE LATERALIZATION
Abstract
Hand–eye lateralization refers to the preferential use of one side of the body despite the symmetrical structure of the human body. Differences in hand–eye lateralization among athletes may influence information processing, which can play an important role in determining sport performance. In sports such as tennis, where perceptual–motor awareness, decision-making, and reaction abilities are particularly prominent, the extent to which variations in hand–eye lateralization affect performance remains an important research question. In this context, the aim of the present study was to compare biomotor and cognitive performances of tennis players according to ipsilateral and contralateral hand–eye lateralization. In accordance with the inclusion criteria, a total of 64 adolescent athletes competing in the U14 category were included in the study (32 ipsilateral and 32 contralateral). The participating tennis players were administered a hand–eye dominance determination test, balance test, agility test, reaction test, and hand–eye coordination test. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Independent Samples t-test in the SPSS 30.0 statistical package program. According to the findings, a statistically significant difference was observed between the groups in selective (foot) reaction time performance (p<0,05), whereas no significant differences were detected in the other parameters (p >0,05). In light of these findings, it was concluded that there was no substantial difference in biomotor and cognitive performances between adolescent tennis players based on hand–eye lateralization. This situation may be attributed to the fact that the athletes included in the sample group were in the U14 age category and therefore still in a period of neural maturation, and that sport-specific adaptations related to tennis may not yet have fully developed.
