COMPARISON OF ALEXITHYMIA AND DISTRESS TOLERANCE LEVELS IN ATHLETES AND NON-ATHLETES

Öz

Abstract: The objective of this study was to examine alexithymia and distress tolerance levels among athletes and non-athletes. The sample consisted of 831 individuals aged between 18 and 50 years (26.25 ± 6.70), including 445 (53.5%) athletes and 386 (46.5%) non-athletes. Data were collected using a Demographic Information Form, the A Alexithymia-28 Scale, and the Distress Tolerance Scale. The results indicated statistically significant differences between athletes and non-athletes in both alexithymia and distress tolerance scores (p < .05). Athletes demonstrated lower alexithymia scores and higher distress tolerance levels than non-athletes. Significant gender differences were observed in several alexithymia and distress tolerance subdimensions; however, no significant gender differences were found in total alexithymia or overall distress tolerance scores. Alexithymia levels did not differ according to sport participation level, although differences were observed in the cognitive component across sport branches. Distress tolerance differed according to sport branch, and regulation scores were higher among amateur athletes than professional athletes. As a result of the study, individuals who engaged in sport demonstrated lower alexithymia levels and higher distress tolerance compared with non-athletes, suggesting more favourable emotional functioning.
