EFFECTS OF EATING DISORDER STATUS ON EXERCISE ADDICTION AND SELF-ESTEEM AMONG MALE INDIVIDUALS LIVING IN TRNC

Öz

This study aimed to examine the effects of exercise addiction and self-esteem on male individuals in relation to their eating disorder status. The study included male participants aged 19–65 who had been performing bodybuilding exercises in private gyms in the TRNC for a minimum of three months. Eating disorder status was assessed using the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26), exercise addiction was evaluated with the Exercise Addiction Scale-21 (EAS-21), and self-esteem was measured using the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire (MBSRQ). Anthropometric measurements included body fat mass (kg), lean body mass (kg), waist circumference (cm), mid-upper arm circumference (cm), upper leg circumference (cm), lower leg circumference (cm), shoulder width (cm), chest width (cm) and wrist circumference (cm). A total of 200 male individuals voluntarily participated in the study, with a mean age of 25.8 ± 6.75 years. A statistically significant relationship was detected between age and dietary restriction scores, demonstrating an 18.5% increase (p< 0.01). Significant positive associations were also observed between several anthropometric parameters and total EAT-26 scores (p < 0.05). Additionally, higher eating attitude test scores were positively associated with increased exercise addiction and higher MBSRQ total scores (p< 0.01). These findings indicate that physical appearance-related anxiety among individuals engaged in bodybuilding contributes to disordered eating behaviors, heightened exercise addiction, and alterations in self-esteem. Furthermore, changes in anthropometric measurements appear to exacerbate eating behavior disorders.
